John Cooper has been performing as Abraham Lincoln in Ohio (and elsewhere) for more that 25 years. He began by appearing in his own children’s schools when they were in elementary school over 25 years ago Friends constantly said he reminded them of Lincoln because of his tall, slender form and Lincoln-styled beard. He has always been a history buff and Lincoln fan, so it was a short step to don Lincoln clothing and a stovepipe hat and begin his Lincoln career.
Since 2008, he has been a professional Lincoln, appearing in schools all over the state, attending fairs and festivals, speaking at dinners, luncheons, and civic organizations, and attending Civil War encampments and events. His favorite charity appearances are Honor Flight Columbus “welcome home” ceremonies about six times a year at the Columbus Airport, when 80 World War II and Korean War vets return from a day in Washington, DC. Abraham Lincoln entertains a crowd of about 400 people who wait two hours for the flight to land and then he greets all the vets as they pass through the Walk of Honor.
In September 2015, Abraham Lincoln will be returning to the Belmont County Fair for the third straight year, entertaining the elementary school children of Belmont County at Fair Field Day, then speaking to the audience that evening prior to the Phil Dirt and the Dozers concert. He will be back on Friday to visit with patrons all day long. He looks forward to visiting with the friends he has made the last two years in Belmont County.
In addition to appearing at the Belmont County Fair this year, Lincoln will be at five other county fairs. From 2009 through 2014, he made appearances for six years at the Ohio State Fair. Near Belmont County, he has also appeared in Noble County, Monroe County, Washington County, and Sistersville and Paden City, West Virginia. He has also preached (as Lincoln) on Lincoln’s spiritual journey at Morristown Christian Church in Belmont County.
John Cooper is a lifetime member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, a national organization that includes nearly all of the top Lincolns in the country (over 100 Lincoln members) and holds annual conventions in locations of importance to Lincoln during his lifetime. John hosted the national convention in Columbus, Ohio in April, 2013. He is currently a board member of the organization and its membership chairman. You can learn more about John and learn where he is performing on his website.
Imagine the rush of performing your new single to more than 80,000 country music fans on the main stage at ‘Jamboree in the Hills,’ one of the top music festivals in the country. Afterwards, you might exchange niceties with superstar Tim McGraw before he goes on stage to rock the crowd. Ohio native Matt VanFossen doesn’t have to image because this is his new reality.
With the release of his new EP, “BOOM,” VanFossen is taking his career to exciting new levels. The hard driving title track is the first single and has already become a fan favorite. It recently won West Virginia-based radio station 97.9 WKKW’s fan-voted “Smackdown” for the maximum of four days straight, beating out new singles from artists such as Dolly Parton and Colt Ford.
“I feel like I’m growing into the artist that I’m meant to be. In doing so, I’ve realized that up-tempo songs are fun,” he says. “When the audience hears the music start for ‘BOOM,’everybody’s ready. I think it’s the hook of the song and the driving music. It demands your attention.”
